CA finds virtualisation security fears have substance

The security industry has been warning for a while about the dangers of unsecured virtual environments and those fears appear to be justified.

According to research carried out by Forrester on behalf of CA the consequences of a widespread move towards virtualisation is to increase the potential risks towards data because of complexity and management issues.

As virtualisation is rolled out there is the potential for the quality and reliability of services to be weakened and those responsible for management can find it increasingly difficult to work effectively.

"The study reflects CA's belief that management is the key to unlocking the business value of virtualisation," said Roger Pilc, corporate senior vice president and general manager of virtualisation and service automation at CA.

The CA views follow on the back of recent research from Gartner that revealed 60% of virtualised servers were a security risk.

Rupert Collier, e-Business product manager at ComputerLinks, said that the security issues were an opportunity for resellers to work with others in the market with the right skills.

"However, [resellers] should not be put off concerns over lack of skills when they can partner with experts that combine product expertise and planning, designing and implementation skills," he said.
