· Directory Services: How to backup recovery information in AD after Bitlocker is turned ON in Windows 7 A common question we are asked is how do I save the recovery information for a Windows 7 machine which has Bitlocker turned ON.
· The Case for Migrating SYSVOL to DFSR Recently I was asked to provide a technical assessment of the risks of continuing to use the File Replication Service (FRS) and the benefits of migrating to DFSR, all regarding SYSVOL on domain controllers. I thought I’d find a decent set of documentation on TechNet, polish it up and send it along – I was wrong; I had to spend several hours coming up with a complete list. Now you can reap the benefits. Hopefully this helps you convince yourself or your management that the time has come to cut the cord on FRS, especially if you have already deployed your Windows Server 2008 DC’s.
· Disaster Recovery Procedures for Active Directory Certificate Services (ADCS) When designing a public key infrastructure (PKI) for your organization, you must develop an effective disaster recovery plan to ensure that, in the event of failure of the computer hosting Certificate Services, you can recover in a timely manner with little effect on your organization.
· Cluster: Understanding the Cluster Debug Log in 2008 One of the major changes from 2003 to 2008 is the way we handle logging of cluster debug events. I thought I’d do a quick write-up on how cluster debug logging works in 2008.
· Creating a Cluster Resource DLL (Part 3) In this series of blog posts we will help you to design, develop and debug the Resource DLL you are developing to give your application high-availability with Windows Server 2008 & 2008 R2 Failover Clustering.

· App-Compat: App Compat Bug Explained: The Mysterious Black Background in Visual Basic 6 (VB6) Forms and Controls Here is an issue I see pop up sporadically, so I figured I would spend the time to dissect how it happens: an application appears to work great on Windows XP, but when you run it on Windows 7 (or Windows Vista), it has a strange black background which used to be white. How does this happen?
· Networking: Updated “DirectAccess Design, Deployment, and Troubleshooting Guides” white paper available This update contains a variety of updates and new content, including the new Design Guide topic Planning for multi-site DirectAccess.
Virtualization Technologies
· Microsoft RemoteFX: Closing the User Experience Gap So why is Microsoft RemoteFX important? Because its support for full-fidelity video as well as rich media and 3D graphics helps close the gap between the user experience of a local user sitting at their physical desktop and that of a remote user connected to a virtual desktop. Today, I want to introduce another aspect of Microsoft RemoteFX and how it can further help close the user experience gap between physical and virtual desktops: Customers looking to deploy a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) expect their users to be able to plug any peripheral device into their client device and have it "just work" within a virtual desktop as if it was a physical desktop.
· Hyper-V: Hyper-V Best Practice Analyzer now available Yesterday we released an update for Windows Server 2008 R2 which provides a “best practice analyzer” for Hyper-V. You can read about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977238. But what is it? How do you use it? And why should you care?
· App-V: The Application Virtualization Sequencing SuperFlow has been released Just a quick heads-up that the Application Virtualization Sequencing SuperFlow has been released. So what’s a SuperFlow? Think flowchart, but cooler and better.
· MED-V: MED-V printing options, plus some common printing related issues and resolutions Printing in MED-V is pretty straight forward. You have two options for printing from MED-V workspaces: Printing from within the guest operating system and redirecting guest operating system printer output to the host printer subsystem (local printer redirection.)
· New Whitepaper Available - Solutions for Virtualizing Internet Explorer The Windows 7 operating system and its default browser, Windows Internet Explorer 8, offer many exciting new features and benefits. However, organizations may find that some of the older applications they rely on are not yet functional or supported in the new Windows 7 operating system. Microsoft provides several alternate ways to create a virtual operating environment on which you can run earlier versions of Internet Explorer.
SQL Server
· SQL Server 2008 R2 Released to Manufacturing! SQL Server 2008 R2 enhancements continue to support mission-critical workloads providing a trusted, scalable platform, increased developer and IT efficiency and managed self-service business intelligence reporting and analytics. It is for these very reasons that SQL Server 2008 R2 is setting records for performance and price/performance on industry standard benchmarks.
· How can I prepare for PowerPivot? One of the main concerns for PowerPivot as an IT Professional or Database Administrator is that PowerPivot involves many different systems of SharePoint, Office, and SQL Server 2008 R2. It also has a lot of moving parts and making sure that all of these parts work together can be daunting.
· Blocking automated SQL injection attacks SQL injection attacks have been on the rise in the last two years, mainly because of automated tools. We first witnessed these automated attacks in December 2007, and since then very little has changed in the way that these attacks work. Today I would like discuss another technique that one can use to block these automated SQL injection attacks against web applications using Microsoft SQL Server as the backend. Before I go into the technique, I would like to reiterate that using parameterized queries is the best way to mitigate SQL injection vulnerabilities in web applications. You can read this Quick Security Reference document on SQL injections that details various classes of SQL injection vulnerabilities and how to address them in design, development and testing phases.

· New SQL Server 2008 R2 Ebook From the Microsoft Learning Team: Our purpose in Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is to point out both the new and the improved in the latest version of SQL Server.
· PowerPivot: Sorting month by natural sort order When a field containing month names is added to a PivotTable or to a Slicer the field is sorted in alphabetical order (April, August, etc.) by default. As you may already have discovered this behavior can easily be changed for the PivotTable allowing you to sort the month in calendar order. The workaround for the Slicers is less obvious however. This post describes how you can naturally sort month fields in calendar order.
· Time Intelligence Functions in DAX One of the most common calculations performed in data analysis is to compare some number to a comparable number for a different time period. Calculations that make comparisons to last month or to the same period from a year ago are very important for any business intelligence tool. Toward that end, DAX introduces 35 new functions expressly for the purpose of working with time based data.
Exchange Server
· Item Recovery in Exchange 2010 Exchange 2010 includes the capability to ensure that deleted items are retained within the dumpster till the deleted item retention period. This prevents accidentally or maliciously deleted items from being deleted permanently, and allows an administrator to recover such items.
· Common Client Access Considerations for Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2010 There are several scenarios for consideration when deploying Exchange Server 2010 into an environment where Outlook 2003 is used. VMST 3.0 builds on this functionality, adding powerful new features designed to streamline the process of keeping your offline virtual machines, templates and VHDs up-to-date with the latest operating system and application updates, without introducing vulnerabilities into your IT infrastructure.
· CM: System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Toolkit V2 Released With this V2 release we re-introduced the Delete Group Class, MP Troubleshooter, Preload Package and Send Schedule Tools from the SMS 2003 Toolkit. All four tools where frequently requested from our customers and we are happy to enable them for use with ConfigMgr 2007 with some added features. The release also includes an updated Security Configuration Wizard Template for ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Furthermore this release includes all the original 2007 Toolkit tools along with the new ones in one easy to install MSI.
· Survey: What are your top pain points for the use of ConfigMgr and WSUS? If you love taking surveys, and who doesn't, then you'll definitely want to stop by MyITForum and give ours a shot. And if you're thinking "Wow, I love surveys, but who has the time?" then don't worry, ours is only a single question. It doesn't get much easier than that. So if you'd like to send us some feedback on what your top pain points are with regards to System Center Configuration Manager 2007 and WSUS then head on over to the following link and let us hear from you
· OM: Reporting Scenarios – More Samples At MMS the author presented a session looking at various reporting scenarios based on the feedback we have received since we launched R2 last year. We broke the session down into four main demonstrations that included samples that customers could take away and use. This blog includes those samples and instructions for using them.
· DPM: SC Data Protection Manager 2010 is Released to Manufacturing DPM 2010 truly delivers unified data protection for Windows servers and clients, in a way that is wholly supportable for protection and recovery and across disk-, tape- and cloud-based media.
· How do I schedule a DPM script from Powershell? Suppose you found or created one of those valuable scripts but want to run it on a schedule or even schedule itself. Whilst there is this wonderful Powershell Pack that includes a module to utilize the task scheduler from Powershell, this article uses the standard “Schtasks” utility. We assume some familiarity with the task scheduler, use “Schtasks /?” to find more information on its usage.
Office SharePoint Technologies
· Content authors guide to SharePoint 2010 In this article I wanted to go over some of the new things that you will come across day to day as a content author working in a SharePoint 2010 environment that will make editing web content a much smoother and more familiar experience for everyone involved.

· SharePoint Server 2010 simplifies user permissions for PerformancePoint dashboard users PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer 2010 is more tightly integrated with SharePoint Server than what we had in Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007, making it easier to save, organize, and manage all your dashboard content in SharePoint Server 2010.
· SharePoint Workspace and the Office Document Cache There are three storage mechanisms SharePoint Workspace uses to store data on your local computer. Lists, InfoPath forms, schema, and views are stored in SharePoint Workspace itself, BCS data has its own storage mechanism, and your SharePoint documents are stored in a common Office file store called the Office Document Cache (ODC). The diagram in the blog post shows the relationships between the three data stores and the content sources for each.
· Comparing SharePoint List and Form Library Forms So you’ve heard about SharePoint list form customization in InfoPath 2010 and you’ve seen the cool demos. But you may be asking yourself – What’s the difference between list and library forms and when should I use one or the other? In this post, we will answer these questions and provide guidance on when to create list vs. library forms.
Microsoft Office System
· Office 2010 Reaches RTM! We reached the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) milestone for Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010! RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone. It is also an appropriate time to re-emphasize our sincere gratitude to the more than 5,000 organizations and partners who have worked with us on rapid deployment and testing of the products. Since the start of our public beta in November 2009, we’ve had more than 7.5 million people download the beta version – that’s more than 3 times the number of 2007 beta downloads!
· Help and Training for Office 2010 and Office 2007 With the launch of Office 2010, we are producing another wave of great help and training content. The new Office 2010 website (office2010.microsoft.com) delivers articles and demos that will quickly get you up to speed on the new features and functionality in Office.
· Access: Macros search form A common feature in well-designed applications is giving users the ability to quickly focus on the data they care about. A search or filter form allows users to specify criteria to limit the records returned. This also enhances performance because the entire recordset is not brought in.
· Excel: Creating a TOC with Hyperlinks Programmatically Dennis offers another approach with this code sample for creating a TOC with hyperlinks. Dennis’ code uses the PageSetup.Pages().Count property, introduced in Excel 2007, to calculate the number of pages on each sheet. In addition, the entries in the TOC link to their respective sheets to improve on-screen workbook navigation.
· Conditional Formatting Rules Simplified Users often want to create conditional formatting rules that go beyond comparing a cell’s value to a single value or a single cell reference - row or column comparisons are commonly requested operations. In this blog post, we will learn how to use relative references in conditional formatting rules to make such tasks easier.
· Outlook: Sending screenshots Last week, as I was shopping on the Internet, I saw a shirt that I thought would be really great for my Dad’s birthday. Before ordering the shirt, I ran it by my Mom, just in case she had any other recommendations. So how did I get my Mom’s feedback? Usually, I just send her a link to the Web site and ask her to take a look. Recently, instead of sending her a link, I have been using the new Screenshot feature in Outlook 2010.
· To-Do Bar Improvements in Outlook 2010 In earlier posts about the To-Do Bar you provided us a lot of great feedback. You might wonder what To-Do Bar improvements were made in Microsoft Outlook 2010. We want to present a brief overview of the work that we have done, based on your feedback, to make the To-Do Bar more useful.
· PowerPoint: As we noted in the last post about inserting a screenshot, a lot of the work for Office 2010 has been about improving workflow for image insertion and editing. I’m going to show you how to use the new Remove Background tool on pictures.
· Broadcast Your Presentation with PowerPoint 2010 Broadcast Slide Show enables you to share your presentation quickly with anyone, anywhere – all directly from PowerPoint 2010. Just open a presentation in PowerPoint, start a broadcast, and share the unique link PowerPoint provides with your audience.
· Project: Assignment Units in Project 2010 If you are an experienced project manager then it’s likely that you are familiar with the Assignment Units field. For those who aren’t, Assignment Units determines the rate at which a resource is assigned to work on a task. For Project 2010 we’ve made some changes to the way that the Assignment Units field is calculated. Primarily, these changes were made in response to customer feedback about the way calculations were impacted when resources entered overtime work.
· Tips and Tricks: Clean up the Gantt bars Sometimes the details aren’t so important. When people are assigned to tasks, their names by default appear next to Gantt bars. But if the work units are set to a value less than 100%, then this value appears next to the person’s name, as well. Now, this might be OK. But there are times when this can be distracting, like during a meeting where you’re presenting your project to stakeholders, and you’d rather not field questions on what the percents mean.
· Visio: Visio 2010 Editions As we get ready for next month’s launch of Visio 2010, we’re ready to announce that Visio 2010 will be available in three different editions. Many of the improvements and new features we’ve added to Visio 2010 are available across all editions, but Professional and Premium contain some additional functionality.
· Word: Word Automation Services: Solution Sample (Workflow) In the Word Automation Services: What It Does post, I provided a very high-level outline of the server-side API provided by the service, showing you the basic outline for working with the service. In this post, I wanted to look at a specific example solution and what's involved in creating it, to walk through a real example of the service end-to-end.
Forefront
· Converging Endpoint Security and Management: “It just makes sense” In October we announced the strategic decision to build Forefront Endpoint Protection (FEP) on System Center Configuration Manager, Microsoft’s market-leading change and configuration management product. We’ve been working to deliver on this strategy and, this week at the Microsoft Management Summit, we demonstrated this convergence for the first time.
· New Multi-server Management for FPE and FPSP Microsoft recently released an update on the evolution of the Forefront security management strategy, which will help Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange (FPE) and Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint (FPSP) customers streamline how messaging and collaboration security is managed across the enterprise. As part of this strategy, we will be releasing a service pack update to Forefront Server Security Management Console (FSSMC) in the second half of 2010 that will provide centralized management for FPE and FPSP servers in your environment. The service pack will be provided to all FPE and FPSP customers at no additional cost.
· Hotfix Rollup 1 for Forefront Security for Office Communications Server is available!
· Forefront UAG and ADFS: Better together I have been asked on several occasions to compare and contrast ADFS with other Microsoft “Single Sign On” (SSO) technologies, such as Forefront UAG. While these are two very different architectures, they both can provide the same end-user experience, namely logging in once and accessing application after application.
Microsoft Dynamics
